nuzzle and scratch

Over three days in May 2008 thirty five members of the orchestra took part in filming for an episode of the newly commissioned BBC children's television production Nuzzle and Scratch.

Nuzzle and ScratchShot in the Menuhin Hall at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Stoke d'Abernon, Surrey, TYO provides the backdrop for the adventures of two hapless puppet alpacas as they wreak havoc amongst the ranks of an orchestra. The music performed is the famous Can Can from Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld.

A twenty minute programme intended for a four to six year old audience, Nuzzle and Scratch mixes knockabout slapstick comedy with a degree of educational content, exploring over twenty instalments various aspects of modern life and the adult world of work. Other episodes see the alpacas despatched from their animal employment agency to a supermarket, a launderette, a library, a school sports day and so on, all with similarly catastrophic results.

At the beginning of each programme Nuzzle and Scratch are shown a short instructional 'documentary' which sets the context for the experiences to come. In the orchestra episode this takes the form of a short film illustrating individual instruments, instrument families and the role of the conductor. This additional sequence was shot as part of a normal full TYO rehearsal, featuring the final movement Alla Marcia from Sibelius's Karelia Suite.
